Amish Oven BBQ Burgers | Easy Oven-Baked Comfort Food
These Amish Oven BBQ Burgers are a simple and delicious throwback to my childhood. Because they’re baked in the oven, they’re easy to enjoy year-round without ever firing up the grill. Made with humble ingredients like ground beef, oats, and onions, then topped with tangy BBQ sauce and sweet onion slices, these burgers are hearty, comforting, and just right for a cozy weeknight supper. {And if you love comforting main dishes, check out my recipes for Old-Fashioned Swiss Steak and Old-Fashioned Meatloaf.}

I grew up in Pennsylvania, where recipes like this were just part of everyday life. Many of the simple, hearty dishes we enjoyed had their roots in Amish or Mennonite cooking, and these oven-baked BBQ burgers were one of them. They may not look fancy, but they carry that unmistakable Amish influence. Wholesome, budget-friendly, and meant to bring everyone running to the table.
Unlike grilled burgers, these BBQ burgers weren’t just for summertime suppers. My mom baked them right in the oven, no matter the season. I can still remember the smell of BBQ sauce and onions filling the kitchen on a chilly evening while the patties sizzled away. It’s a meal that’s stuck with me as a favorite, and these days I love serving them with homemade fries or a simple side of beans and coleslaw.

Key Ingredients for Oven BBQ Burgers
Here’s what you’ll need to make BBQ Burgers:
(Exact measurements are in the recipe card below.)
- Ground Beef – Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy oven-baked burgers with plenty of flavor. Leaner beef works, too, but the patties won’t be quite as tender.
- Oats – Instead of breadcrumbs, these Amish-style burgers use oats as the binder. It’s an old-fashioned trick that keeps the patties moist and gives them a hearty, rustic texture.
- Onion – A little onion powder goes into the meat for flavor, and slices of onion bake right on top with the BBQ sauce. They soften in the oven and add just the right touch of sweetness.
- BBQ Sauce – Use your favorite store-bought brand or homemade sauce. Sweet, smoky, or spicy, they all work beautifully, so pick the flavor your family loves most. I love using my homemade Sweet & Smoky Cherry BBQ Sauce.
- Worcestershire Sauce – Just a splash adds depth and that little something extra that makes the burgers taste homemade.

Oven BBQ Burgers Storage & Leftovers
One of the nice things about these Amish-style BBQ Burgers is how well they keep. If you’ve got leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat BBQ burgers, simply pop them back into the oven at 350°F until warmed through, or give them a quick zap in the microwave if you’re short on time.
The air fryer is another great option to reheat the patties without drying them out. Preheat to 350°F, place the burgers in a single layer, and heat for 4–6 minutes, flipping halfway through. If you’d like to add cheese, lay a slice on top during the last minute so it melts perfectly.
And yes—you can freeze BBQ burgers! Once baked and cooled, wrap each patty individually, then place them in a freezer bag or container. They’ll keep in the freezer for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, thaw overnight in the fridge and warm them in the oven or air fryer. They come out tasting just as delicious the second time around.

Serving Suggestions
These Amish Oven BBQ Burgers are so versatile, and you can dress them up or down depending on the meal. For a true farmhouse-style supper, skip the buns and serve the patties with mashed potatoes, green beans, and maybe a slice of cornbread on the side. If you’re after a cookout feel, pile them onto soft hamburger buns with extra BBQ sauce, a scoop of coleslaw, and a side of baked beans or potato salad. However you serve them, these baked burgers are the kind of hearty, comforting meal that brings everyone to the table.

I hope you’ll give these Amish Oven BBQ Burgers a try the next time you’re looking for an easy, comforting meal to bring to the table. They’re simple enough for a weeknight but still have that old-fashioned charm that makes them feel special. Whether you serve them up on buns with all the fixings or alongside mashed potatoes for a farmhouse-style supper, I think you’ll find they’re the kind of recipe you’ll come back to again and again.

Description
An Amish-inspired recipe from my Pennsylvania roots, these juicy oven-baked BBQ burgers are topped with sweet onions and tangy sauce for a comforting, homemade meal the whole family will love.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds ground beef (80-85% lean works best)
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup old-fashioned or quick oats *See Notes Below
- 1/4 cup cold milk or cold water
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 cup BBQ sauce (homemade or store-bought) *See Notes Below
- 1–2 sweet onions sliced
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Mix the burger meat: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, oats, milk or water, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape: Form into 6–8 patties and arrange them in the prepared baking dish.
- Brown patties: This step is optional, but I prefer to lightly brown my patties before baking. For a shortcut, you can skip this step and go to step #5.
- Top and sauce: Spoon a generous spoonful of BBQ sauce over each patty. Place onion slices on top, pressing them gently into the sauce.
- Bake: Bake for 45 minutes. During the baking, baste at once or twice with BBQ sauce and juices from the pan. Be sure the internal temp of the burgers reaches at least 160°F.
- Serve: Let rest 5 minutes. Serve on soft buns with extra BBQ sauce. Or skip the bun and serve with mashed potatoes and a side of green beans for a true farmhouse supper.
Notes
For a finer-textured burger, use quick oats or pulse old-fashioned rolled oats in a food processor.
I like to use my homemade Cherry BBQ Sauce. You can get the recipe here: Sweet & Smoky Cherry BBQ Sauce
