Description

An Amish-inspired recipe from my Pennsylvania roots, these juicy oven-baked BBQ burgers are topped with sweet onions and tangy sauce for a comforting, homemade meal the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Units
  • 2 pounds ground beef (80-85% lean works best)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned or quick oats *See Notes Below
  • 1/4 cup cold milk or cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (homemade or store-bought) *See Notes Below
  • 1-2 sweet onions sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Mix the burger meat: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, oats, milk or water, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  3. Shape: Form into 6–8 patties and arrange them in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Brown patties: This step is optional, but I prefer to lightly brown my patties before baking. For a shortcut, you can skip this step and go to step #5.
  5. Top and sauce: Spoon a generous spoonful of BBQ sauce over each patty. Place onion slices on top, pressing them gently into the sauce.
  6. Bake: Bake for 45 minutes. During the baking, baste at once or twice with BBQ sauce and juices from the pan. Be sure the internal temp of the burgers reaches at least 160°F.
  7. Serve: Let rest 5 minutes. Serve on soft buns with extra BBQ sauce. Or skip the bun and serve with mashed potatoes and a side of green beans for a true farmhouse supper.

Notes

For a finer-textured burger, use quick oats or pulse old-fashioned rolled oats in a food processor.

I like to use my homemade Cherry BBQ Sauce. You can get the recipe here: Sweet & Smoky Cherry BBQ Sauce
