South Carolina Mustard BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup yellow mustard
  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (use more or less to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional – if using, make sure it’s an all-natural brand)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together all of the ingredients, except for the butter and liquid smoke. It may look separated, but it will come together as it cooks.
  2. Simmer gently for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Stir in butter and liquid smoke, and simmer for 5 more minutes, or until the sauce is thickened to your liking.
